About Phosphate Binders
Phosphate binders
Phosphate binders are a type of medication that are an essential part of treating hyperphosphataemia. Phosphate binders work in the gut to soak up the extra phosphate found in the food you eat before it can be absorbed into your blood. (That’s why it’s important to take them with all meals and snacks as directed by your doctor.) The phosphate binders then hold onto the phosphate as they pass through your intestines until they are both eliminated in your faeces.
Types of phosphate binders
There are several different types of phosphate binders:
- Calcium-containing binders
- Metal-containing binders
- Calcium-free, metal-free binders
All of these binders can effectively lower the amount of phosphate in your blood.
